It all began on a very small scale in 1977: in the kitchen of a private home in Schackendorf. From there—and at a gas station in Bad Oldesloe—the Tohde family launched their rental business. From the very beginning, their fleet included vehicles ranging from compact cars to 7.49-metric-ton trucks.
What began as a pragmatic solution back then has evolved over the years into an integral part of regional mobility.
Entrepreneurial Courage in Challenging Times
A decisive turning point came in 1996: Following the death of company founder Heinz Tohde, the next generation took over sole management of the company—during a difficult economic period.
Through hard work and entrepreneurial acumen, the company is successfully stabilized and realigned. A challenging situation lays the foundation for sustainable growth.

Collaboration with strong partners plays a key role in achieving this goal. Following initial partnerships—including one with Autohansa and as a licensee of Alamo/National—Tohde became a system partner of what was then CCUnirent System GmbH, now Choice AG, in 2003.
Just one year later, the company was named <b>System Partner of the Year</b> —an early sign of the successful collaboration.
Since then, the partnership has been characterized by continuity and trust. Following a period of reorientation, Tohde Car Rental is once again the exclusive partner of Choice AG.
